South Yorkshire Orienteering 2018-19

posted 18 Oct 2018, 03:29 by J Tee

We have a few amazing children from Stocksbridge Junior School taking part in the South Yorkshire Orienteering events in Sheffield. Thea (and Alice now in Y7) complete the courses and Flynn also in Y5 runs each month and is achieving exceptionally good results. Last Saturday’s event in Meersbrook Park, Flynn was 4th and Thea 50th out of 173 runners on their designated course. Flynn was 2nd in his age category and Thea 9th. At present the events are really well attended overall, but Thea and Flynn are the only two children from SJS competing on behalf of the school and it would be great to spread the word about the events and see some more SJS faces there.

The club is really welcoming and helpful to beginners. The schools’ events offer courses that attract all levels of ability from total beginners, to national level competitors so it is really inclusive and fun to take part. The courses really challenge the children not just to run, but to use the maps to navigate and therefore develop independence and problem solving skills. Courses for this age range are on average between 1-1.5km long. Children can complete the course alone or shadowed by family if not confident and being a SFSS member school the first run of the day is free. Additional course runs are just £2. Maps and electronic dibbers are provided so nothing is needed.

If you would like some great healthy outdoor family fun then the next monthly event is 12.30-3pm. Saturday 24th November and will be in Ecclesall Woods.  The league then resumes in January. If anyone wants to come along, look for the yellow SYO flags and gazebo to find the registration desk.
