All aboard! The Year Six Evacuee Experience

posted 5 Oct 2015, 13:13 by J Janiszewski
The children of Year Six had the journey of a lifetime aboard a steam train at the Churnet Valley Railway in Staffordshire.  It was a journey back in time to experience the life of a Second World War evacuee.  The children were hastily boarded onto a train, just as the air raid siren sounded to signal that the German Luftwaffe were on their way!  Stopping in a tunnel to keep safe, the children experienced a true black out - a nerve jangling experience even for the teaching staff!  Once at their destination, the children had the opportunity to become 'aircraft spotters', to see what an evacuee would have packed into their suitcase and to become accustomed to food rationing.  The day ended with a real treat when the children met a local evacuee and two World War Two veterans.  Needless to say, the children will have all been exhausted after this thrilling day out of class!
