Spelling

Spelling at Stocksbridge Junior School follows the Read Write Inc. programme. Spelling is taught daily. Each week, children are given approximately 20 spellings taken from the Read Write Inc. programme. These also include a selection of spellings taken from the National Curriculum. Children are expected to learn the spellings for homework and are tested weekly.

Children may use Spellanywhere to practise their weekly spellings:

Spelling Bee

During the Spring half term, there is a real ‘buzz’ around the school as our children took part in Stocksbridge Junior School’s Spelling Bee!

Mrs Ross explains, "Since September children have been working incredibly hard each week to learn spellings for their weekly tests. To celebrate this fantastic effort, we run Stocksbridge Junior School’s Spelling Bee! In the first round, an age appropriate list of 100 words is given to each pupil to learn. Several of these words are selected from the National Curriculum’s list of key spellings, many are from spelling patterns that children have been learning and others are slightly more tricky words. Every child is awarded a special certificate for their participation and medals are awarded to the two highest scoring children from each English set. The ten highest scoring children from each year group progress to the semi-final."

"Following Round One, the semi-finalists receive a new list of words to learn in preparation for their semi-final.  Our Y3/Y4 semi-final takes place in front of the lower school children and later the same afternoon our Y5/Y6 semi-final takes place in front of our upper school audience. Again, the five highest scorers from each event qualify for the grand final! The grand final takes place in front of the whole school during which we crown our Spelling Bee Champion!"
